Light and shadow to Filippo Cannata

logo_lightisIn addition to being lighting designer, Filippo Cannata is a great philosopher of light. In his wonderful memorial, "Light, shadow, half-light and darkness", he expresses his own ideas on the role that light must have in a space used by a man. To Cannata, shadow is the companion of light: giving a shape to it he gives shape to a three-dimensional space. The border area between light and dark, the half-light, becomes a metaphor for balance and harmony of the elements whilst he despises the continuous and uniform light that does not reveal anything but flattens everything. For this reason Cannata does not fear the darkness, not even fight it, he rather uses and praises it in his works. To him the darkness is a refreshing break, a moment of reflection that consents to fully enjoy the beauty contained in the circle of light. Great care is taken to respect of the natural light of the stars and the moon: he integrates his light patterns to those of nature, melding the artificial landscape that is illuminated with the natural one which surrounds it. Principles such as environmental sustainability and energy saving are the background to the creation of each lighting design project whose ultimate goal is always the welfare of man to be infused through the most complete and total satisfaction of the senses, the research of emotion and the poetics of the place.
